1914 Iron Cross 1st class, marked “Fr” under the catch for Gebrüder Friedländer, Berlin.
Three-piece construction with a magnetic iron core and silvered frame.
It is in well-worn condition with a lovely patina and a very good look. The black paint on the core is very faded.
Engraving to the reverse of the cross reads “Oblt.z.S / W. Dietsch / L5, L17, L35, L61 / 14/18”
As the engraving states, the cross belonged to Oberleutnant Zür See Werner Dietsch, who served on four rigid airships: L5, L17, L35, and L61, from 1914 to 1918.
A remarkable and truly exceptional piece of history.
