Demjansk shield (German: Ärmelschild Demjansk).
Magnetic, steel construction with soldered-on prongs.
Complete with backplate, army wool, and typical, original factory backing paper with 4 holes.
Instituted on April 25th, 1943, to commemorate the troops who fought in the Demjansk pocket during the early months of 1942. Awarded to military personnel of Wehrmacht Heer and Luftwaffe, who met one of the award requirements, i.e. served honorably in the besieged area for 60 days, or have been wounded in the besieged area, or have earned a bravery award while serving in the besieged area (for Heer); have flown 50 combat missions over the besieged and surrounding area, or have flown and landed 50 supply missions (for Luftwaffe).
The campaign shield was worn on the upper left sleeve of the uniform.
