Officially in Ukrainian Військові відділи націоналістів (English: Nationalist Military Detachments) and Bergbauernhilfe (English: Mountain Peasants' Help) in german documents. Legion Ukraine was one of the earliest volunteer formations in the German Army. Organized by Abwehr (German intelligence organization), Legion was secretly formed in Austria in 1939 from members of Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) (Ukrainian: Організація Українських Націоналістів (ОУН) and placed under the command of Roman Sushko (Ukrainian Роман Сушко). In cooperation with Abwehr and SD (Sicherheitsdienst des Reichsführers-SS) (English: Security Service of the Reichsführer-SS), Legion was to participate in the war effort also as an instigator of an uprising in the east directed against the Jewish population and Poles after the attack on Poland. After Poland fell to the Soviet Union by virtue of Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Legion was incorporated into the 14th German Army (German: 14. Armee) and participated in the attack on Poland on September 1. After the Polish campaign, the Legion was demobilized.
