Wound badge in black miniature, 9 mm. The black finish is intact. Excellent condition.
Instituted (re-instituted) on September 1, 1939. The badge had three
grades - black, silver, and gold. The badge was only awarded to military
personnel, until in March 1943 civilians that were wounded in air raids
also became eligible. The wound badge in black was the lowest of the three
grades and was awarded for one or two wounds (including frostbite in the
line of duty).
